So.. what game, exactly, is this person playing?

Most games I’ve played make you go out of your way to find excessively slutty female armor. Not to mention it isn’t uncommon for mmos to give you the option to change the appearance of your gear without losing the stats. Stop bitching. Lol.

I take it you’ve never actually played Tera or FFXI? lol

idk the context of this but of course it’s a brown person who gets called out for appropriating or misunderstanding an east asian culture when it seems like the manga-ka is completely stereotyping brown people to be ignorant cultureless morons. while refusing to answer for the loads of appropriation and ridicule of brown cultures that east asian cultures are accountable for.

kinda tired of it tbh. i see stuff like this but not much about east asians getting collected for blatant anti-blackness and appropriation when the latter happens 24 fucking 7.

I’d like to ask why the mangaka didn’t use a white person since there are FAR more white people fucking up then there are brown ones. The fact that they used a Black person says a lot really. - J

The mangaka himself is a brown person.

I’m not sure how I feel about this

I think the mangaka only used a brown person because he himself is brown but meh. Its kind of a load of shit in my opinion. I dunno.

I understand the point that he’s making about the otaku thing, but it gets controversial because he used a black person to represent someone who is obsessed with japan and etc…

I mean it fails to acknowledge that the majority of people who get it wrong and fuck it up are white than brown, and it paints that black people are ignorant when it comes to japanese culture which is bullshit.

and it’s like another commenter said like things like this (of black people getting called out on being otakus and stuff) is okay, but asians getting called out and being collected for their anti-blackness get a pass and it’s fucked up, and things like this are common.

Yeah. I kind of got a feeling of self-hate emanating from him after I researched who he was. He also seems to be a fetishizer in my opinion after seeing the cover of the manga he authors. Psh. And he’s mixed with Jamaican. FML.

from his page

I think that some people might be getting the wrong idea regarding the book. It’s not about attacking people who like anime or even the people who have built up in their heads an idea of what Japan is like. It’s about how a giant system has been created to sell that idea to people who are lonely or unhappy so that they watch more cartoons and buy more crap and how constantly consuming this idea is ultimately dangerous. And it’s not just anime. There are characters who are suckered in by american culture, pornography, and the idea of what it means to be famous. It’s all kind of tragic, really”

This makes no sense to me actually. I mean, that’s with all media, which in general you should think about the media you’re consuming. Some people just consume media without a thought and obsess with it to the point of obsession and that’s unhealthy.

I just think that the execution should have been handled with a bit more care, and with more of an open mind of who the audience is and how they’re going to interpret this.

Whats funny is that he says that but yet he seems to be doing the exact same thing he’s speaking out against. He’s projecting this image of what Japan is supposed to be actually like. I mean, look at the damn manga cover. Its ridiculous. I also think that as a brown person like he said, he should’ve handled the execution with more care because now his Japanese readers are probably going to think that mentality is limited to dark skinned people when in reality, we are not the majority. Psh. This is all giving me a headache. Too much anti-blackness in the world. Too much.

The more I read it the more irritated I get. because it does reek of anti-blackness, and to an outsider, it paints that all black people who are into anime, like the one up above, all think alike and think that japan is nothing but this “Neverland”. It’s not as if black people have it hard already with anti-blackness coming at us from all angles.

And being a poc, it’s one of those reasons as to why I don’t tell a lot of people that i’m into anime and stuff because then they jump to the wrong conclusions when I know that anime is only a small fraction of their culture.

something about this rubs me the wrong way

oh god just like the manga with the cute little brown boy damn

Trying to figure out how having one black character who happens to be an ignorant otaku = saying all black people are culturally insensitive morons

jfc like having a black character do something stupid isn’t always some conspiratory statement against black people

When are people going to realize that equality isn’t going to happen while ^THIS^ type of shit is going on? I wouldn’t have even thought, “Oh geez, that’s a black guy.” if this post hadn’t existed. I think you guys need to take a deep breath and quit looking for reasons to get offended. Geebus H.
